An Atlanta-area man died after jumping out a third-floor window while police were in the process of arresting him on Tuesday morning, a spokesman for Atlanta Police tells PEOPLE.
The unidentified man was handcuffed when he dove through the glass and hit the pavement below face-first, Sgt. Warren Pickard says. He was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital, where he was being treated for “several broken bones” and a head injury when he was pronounced dead at 1:30 p.m.
Fulton County deputies told the television station that the man was facing a drug charge and had showed up at Fulton County Superior Court Diversion Center for pretrial intervention. But authorities found a gun on him, so they arrested him and were in the process of completing paperwork when he allegedly jumped through the window, according to 11Alive.
Justin Israel, a waiter at a nearby café who said he witnessed the incident, told WSB-TV that the man who fell “didn’t look in good shape.”
Atlanta Police and the Fulton County Sheriff’s Office are both investigating the incident.
