Police in Florida have charged a 12-year-old girl with battery for allegedly pinching the rear end of one of her male classmates, PEOPLE confirms.
Authorities in Longwood, Florida, tell PEOPLE the alleged incident occurred weeks ago, but police only got involved last week after the boy’s mother demanded the girl be prosecuted.
The pinching happened on school grounds during class time, police say.
The girl allegedly told investigators she doesn’t know the boy, and that pinching is something she does with her friends.

Police officials tell PEOPLE the boy did not want the girl arrested for the alleged pinching but that his mother was insistent. The girl was taken to a juvenile detention center for processing, authorities say.
In an interview with WPTV, the girl’s father called his daughter’s arrest an “overreaction.”
“Lord, Lord Lordy what has this world come to,” the father said. “Kids can’t even be a kid.”
Prosecutors have referred the girl to a diversion program; the charge would be wiped from her record upon completion of the program, which includes routine drug testing and community service, authorities say.
