A British Formula One driver and his wife were burglarized and may have been gassed while vacationing in St. Tropez.
Jenson Button and his wife, model Jessica Michibata, rented a villa with friends in the French resort town and were robbed Monday evening, PEOPLE has confirmed.
Two men broke into the property while everyone slept and stole a number of items of jewelry including Michibata’s engagement ring, a rep for Button told PEOPLE.
“The police have indicated that this has become a growing problem in the region with perpetrators going so far as to gas their proposed victims through the air conditioning units before breaking in. Whilst unharmed, everyone involved is unsurprisingly shaken by the events,” the rep says.
The rep also added to BBC that Button, 35, and Michibata, 30, might have been gassed by the intruders as they were sleeping.
Button won the Formula One drivers’ championship in 2009, and the couple married in January.
