A Sarasota, Florida, man allegedly murdered his girlfriend and then staged the crime scene to make it look like a suicide.

Brian Wilson, 47, has been charged with the murder of Jennifer Copeland, 43.

A statement from Sarasota, Florida, police alleges Wilson was arrested on November 28 while in jail on an unrelated driving while intoxicated charge. He remains in police custody on an unspecified amount of bail.

Court records show Copeland was found hanging from a noose in her garage apartment in what cops believe was an attempt to make Copeland’s death look like a suicide.

Copeland’s mother allegedly told investigators that Wilson showed her the same noose the day before her daughter was found dead. According to court records, she told police she’d asked Wilson to remove the rope from the garage’s rafters.

Documents obtained by PEOPLE indicate that Wilson allegedly told a number of witnesses he strangled Copeland because “she would not shut up.”

Wilson allegedly told witnesses it took a long time for Copeland to die as he strangled her, according to court documents.

Information regarding Wilson’s attorney was not immediately available at press time.
