A man has been arrested and charged in the death of his toddler son after leaving his baby in a car for eight hours in Palm Harbor, Florida, according to several reports.
Troy Whitaker, 41, was charged with aggravated manslaughter, Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Kavontae Smalls said, according to CNN.
Whitaker dropped his 5-year-old daughter off at school and forgot to drop his 23-month-old son off at daycare on Friday morning. Instead, Whitaker returned home and left his son Lawson Whitaker in the car from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Sheriff Bob Gualtieri told WFLA.
Fox 13 News said Gualtieri told them it appeared Whitaker thought he made the drop-off, but instead went home to study for a promotional test for the Hillsborough County Fire Department.
Whitaker took his dog on a walk around 3:30 p.m. and got groceries at Publix before discovering his son in the seat behind the driver’s side seat, according to Fox 13. Whitaker tried to give his son CPR, but told deputies that his son was blue and not breathing.
