Eric Warfel, the Ohio father who was arrested last month after his daughter’s body was found rotting in a crib, has pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity to charges of abusing a corpse and tampering with evidence.

The body of 21-month-old Ember Warfel was discovered in her crib by a cable company employee in late July. It’s believed that she died around June 18, WKYC reports.

Warfel told police at the time that he’d been throwing trash into the child’s bedroom to cover up the smell of the decomposing body.

It’s unclear how the toddler died, but police have said that Warfel could face more serious charges in the future, pending an investigation into the cause and manner of the tot’s death. The medical examiner has not yet ruled on either.

Now that he’s entered his plea, Warfel will go to Akron Hospital for a psychiatric evaluation.

It’s not the first time an infant in Warfel’s care has died. In March 2013, 5-month-old Erin Delynn Warfel died, Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner’s office records show. The baby died while Warfel lived in Cleveland, and the cause of death was ruled as “sudden unexplained infant death,” according to the AP.
