David Cassidy and his wife are divorcing after 23 years of marriage.
Sue Shifrin-Cassidy filed for divorce from the former teen heartthrob Tuesday morning, TMZ reports.
“This has been looming for some time,” Shifrin-Cassidy, 64, told TMZ. “I am truly heartbroken that our marriage is ending.”
“It is very sad that Sue chose to this approach,” Cassidy, 63, said in a statement via his rep. “I have tried to resolve this amicably outside of the public eye. I have reached out to her with no response over the last three months. It’s a sad day for me and for our son Beau.”
Cassidy was last in the spotlight as a contestant on Celebrity Apprentice.
The news comes after Cassidy was arrested in January for driving while intoxicated. In total, the “I Think I Love You” singer has racked up three DWIs. His manager told PEOPLE at the time that Cassidy “was doing very well in sobriety” before lawsuits concerning Partridge Family merchandise supposedly drove him to relapse.
Cassidy talked to Entertainment Tonight from rehab on Feb. 5, saying, “This has been a very difficult time for me battling this deadly disease, like millions of others in the country.”
Speaking to TMZ, Shifrin-Cassidy wished her estranged husband the best in his recovery. “I’m glad David is getting the help he needs and I am confident he will come back better and stronger than ever,” she said.
