Police in Louisiana spent hours on Tuesday morning trying to locate the parents of an infant that had been abandoned on a sandy beach before ultimately finding them jogging along the water’s edge – in the nude.

Cops detained Cody and Monique Bourgeois three hours after dispatchers were alerted to the abandoned 1-year-old, a Cameron Parish Sheriff’s Office spokesperson confirms to PEOPLE.

The baby girl was sunburnt and covered in mosquito bites after being left alone at Holly Beach, the spokesperson says. The parents were eventually located three miles down the shore, the spokesperson added.

Cody and Monique Bourgeois have both been charged with child desertion and obscenity. The spokesperon said cops believe the couple was under the influence of drugs.

An additional cruelty to a juvenile charge could be filed soon, according to the spokesperson.

Meanwhile, Louisiana’s Department of Child Protective Services has launched its own investigation into the allegations.

It is unclear whether the parents have retained an attorney to comment on the allegations.
