Nine people are dead after a gunman opened fire at a historic church in Charleston, South Carolina, on Wednesday night, in what authorities have deemed a hate crime.

The shooter, who has been identified as Dylann Storm Roof, 21, is now in custody in Shelby, North Carolina, about three hours from Charleston.

According to authorities, Roof allegedly sat alongside his victims for about an hour during a Bible study class inside the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church before opening fire.
