Michael Egan, who accused X-Men director Bryan Signer of abuse, has been dropped by his lawyer

Michael Egan, the man who accused X-Men director Bryan Singer of abusing him when he was a teenager, refused to sign a $100,000 lawsuit settlement, and Egan’s attorney, Jeff Herman, is dropping him as a client.

Egan, who filed a lawsuit in April accusing Singer of sexually assaulting and abusing him as a teenager in Hawaii and California, refused to sign the settlement documents, obtained by BuzzFeed. The documents show Singer agreed to the settlement in June. It appears to be inked by Bryan Singer, his attorney, Martin Singer (no relation), and Herman.

But Egan says he refused to sign. “This exact kind of take-it-and-shut-up deal is why I decided to stand up in the first place,” Egan told BuzzFeed. “Being silenced goes completely against what I believe in and offers no protection for other vulnerable children.”

Herman confirms he’s parting ways with Egan. “We are in the process of withdrawing from representing Mr. Egan in all his cases and have no further comment concerning his matters at this time,” he said in a statement. “We cannot comment on any actual or purported documents that may or may not be or reflect privileged or confidential communications.”

Martin Singer says the proposed settlement does not change Bryan Singer’s stance that he never abused Egan.

“As Mr. Egan and his now ex-lawyers know, a legitimate claim in this type of case can run into the millions of dollars, so their willingness to resolve it for such a relatively low figure demonstrates their total lack of confidence in their chances for success,” he says in a statement to PEOPLE. “This was their way of trying to save face after an unsuccessful attempted shakedown of Bryan Singer.”

The statement added: “Bryan and his team will continue to fight to clear his name and intend to pursue charges of malicious prosecution against Egan.”

Egan also launched similar lawsuits against three other men this spring, but has since dropped the suits.
