The bodies of “probably seven” dead babies were found inside an apartment in the German state of Bavaria, police said Friday.

Authorities were alerted to the babies after a woman found the body of one of them, Reuters reports. A search of the apartment turned up more corpses.

“Officers found several bodies of infants. The police and prosecutor believe that there are probably seven dead,” police said in a statement, according to the Agence France-Presse.

The bodies are now being examined by forensic experts, but authorities said it could take some time “in view of their poor condition, in some cases,” the Associated Press reports.

Officials are looking to question the apartment’s previous tenant, identified only as a 45-year-old woman.

It’s unclear how the person who discovered the bodies found the first infant or whether anyone was living in the apartment at the time of the discovery. The investigation is ongoing.
