A night of celebration ended in tragedy when a Baton Rouge man accidentally shot and killed his children’s babysitter Saturday night.
Adonis Forbes, 25, and his wife were out celebrating their anniversary when the couple went home to check on their young children, who were being watched by 13-year-old Murrain Hawkins, Baton Rouge Police Department Cpl. Don Coppola tells PEOPLE.
While home, Coppola says, Forbes decided to check on his handgun, which was malfunctioning. As he was trying to fix it, the weapon fired, striking Hawkins in the abdomen.
BRPD spokesman Cpl. L’Jean McKneely told The Times-Picayune that when authorities arrived on the scene, they found Forbes administering aid to the teen. Hawkins was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he later died during surgery.
Forbes, meanwhile, was taken into custody and charged with negligent homicide. He was released after posting a $10,000 bond.
The case remains an open investigation despite the arrest, Coppola says. Forbes has not yet entered a plea.
