The body of a newborn baby was found in the restroom at South Houston High School on Wednesday night, PEOPLE confirms.
“Last night, at about 9 p.m., one of the custodians found a body in one of the bathrooms,” a Pasadena ISD spokeswoman said during a press conference Thursday. “It was an infant…you might refer to it as a fetus.”
She added: “Immediately, the police were contacted. When they arrived, they determined the baby was not alive.”
Using surveillance footage, authorities were able to identify the mother of the child. She is receiving medical treatment at this time, but because she is a juvenile, she is not being identified. Her family was not aware that she was pregnant, according to the spokeswoman.

The mother, a student at South Houston High School, is not under arrest at this time. “Our concern is that she will be okay,” said the spokeswoman. “It’s a sad, sad situation.”
The autopsy is scheduled for Thursday. It’s unclear whether the baby was born alive or was a stillborn.
Police are investigating.
