A 38-year-old man is charged with murder for allegedly fatally shooting three women in Alabama and kidnapping a fourth.
According to a statement from the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office, Donnie Lee Abernathy of Centre, Alabama, allegedly entered a home in Weiss Lake shortly after midnight on Monday evening.
Once he was inside, Abernathy allegedly shot three women and a man who lived in the home together, before fleeing the scene with a fourth woman that he kidnapped. The man survived the shooting, but the three women did not.
As officers raced to the home, “the suspect fled and struck a deputy’s vehicle,” reads the statement. A brief police pursuit followed, coming to an end in Sand Rock, Alabama, where Abernathy crashed his vehicle.

An official tells PEOPLE the incident involved “a domestic situation,” but they would not elaborate any further.
Several media outlets are reporting the mother of Abernathy’s child is listed as living at the home.
Abernathy is being held without bond in the Cherokee County Detention Center, charged with capital murder, first degree kidnapping, first degree criminal mischief, and attempting to elude police. He has not yet entered a plea to the charges against him.
