Abigail made headlines when she squeezed her mother's hand while in critical condition
Abigail Kopf, the 14-year-old who was critically wounded when she was shot during an Uber driver’s murderous rampage last month, was released from the hospital last month, PEOPLE confirms.
Kopf, whose injuries were so severe that doctors feared she could be pronounced brain dead – until she squeezed her mother’s hand – has been moved to an inpatient rehabilitation center in Grand Rapids, Michigan, a Bronson Methodist Hospital press release states.
She will be there until she is deemed fit to return home, the release states.
“The pace of her progress is exceptional,” Dr. Aaron Lane-Davies, medical director of Bronson Children s Hospital, said in the release. Kopf has been recovering steadily since she first showed signs of consciousness in February.
Lane-Davis states: “It will be a long journey ahead, but she is regaining her functions more quickly than expected for someone with an extensive brain injury.”
Last week, Kopf began walking days after she opened her eyes for the first time.
