A 6-year-old boy was killed in Marksville, Louisiana, on Tuesday after authorities opened fire during a chase on a car in which he was riding, according to Louisiana State Police.

The boy’s father, who was behind the wheel, was critically injured by the gunfire, the Associated Press reports.

Avoyelles Parish Coroner Dr. L. J. Mayeux identified the father as Chris Few and his son as Jeremy Mardis. Few was allegedly fleeing authorities who were trying to serve him with a warrant.

Mardis was shot five times in the head and chest, according to NBC News.

It’s unclear why officials opened fire on the car, but Mayeux said the boy was shot “accidentally” by officers.

“More likely than not they were shooting into the driver side, and he was on the passenger side,” Mayeux said. “He was in the line of fire.”

Few remains in serious condition.
