The singer talks playing pretend – on TV and for Halloween

As a “huge fan” of ABC’s Nashville, Sara Evans says she jumped at the chance to appear on the series.

“I was so excited,” she tells PEOPLE of filming the episode that airs Wednesday. “I’ve been watching the show since the beginning.”

Evans, who says she was planning to re-watch the previous two seasons “to get prepared” for her cameo, plays herself and duets with Will Chase (playing country superstar Luke Wheeler) on her new single “Put My Heart Down.” The singer joins a long list of real-life country stars who’ve appeared on the show, including Florida Georgia Line, Brad Paisley and Luke Bryan, and says she loved the experience so much, she was tempted to lobby for more.

“I probably would have campaigned and begged to have been on the show regularly, but that would be hard for me because of the kiddos,” Evans says of her blended family of six children (ages 10 to 16) with husband Jay Barker. She also relishes her normal family life in Birmingham, Alabama, about three hours south of Nashville, where she and Barker have a close circle of neighborhood friends.

“Every Halloween, there’s this huge block party at my friend’s house and I usually sing a song and my son Avery plays drums,” Evans shares. And while her kids are mostly growing out of the holiday, she and Barker still love to dress up.

In recent years, however, they’ve had to tone down their outfits. “My favorite was one year I did a sexy police officer and Jay was my prisoner,” she reveals. “It was really cute, but I couldn’t do that now because the kids are older and they’d all be like, ‘Oh that’s so embarrassing!’ ”

Catch Evans on Nashville this Wednesday, Oct. 29, at 10 p.m. ET on ABC.
