Even before he tied the knot, country star Jason Aldean was looking forward to a new life together with his now-wife, Brittany Kerr, as a married couple.

“We’re living our life. We’re happy. We enjoy each other and we’re looking forward to getting married and moving on to the next stage of our lives together,” Aldean, 38, told PEOPLE in February, before this weekend’s nuptials. “My life is great. I’m really happy. We’re really happy.”

And the “My Kind of Party” singer – who admits he realized through the wedding-planning process “that weddings and the wedding day is something girls dream of their whole lives” – lent a hand with the details for the couple’s special day.

“Britt gets overwhelmed sometimes, lots of people are pulling on her,” explained Aldean. “She wants me to love it too, so when she asks, I’m happy to give my opinion. Lots of people are pulling on the bride, so I’m happy to step in and make a decision if that’s what she wants.”

“But I’m not going to jump in there and stomp around or give my opinion when it’s not wanted,” he added.

One sweet wedding detail Aldean didn t plan?

“I don t eat cake, so I’m not even weighing in on the groom’s cake,” he shared.

The couple – who were first linked when they were photographed getting cozy in 2012, while Aldean was still married to ex-wife Jessica Ussery, the mother of his two children – have received a lot of criticism over their relationship.

“There will always be those people who don t want to let it go, who will always be negative no matter what, and I can t let that get to me,” explained Aldean, who also took to Instagram in August 2014 to defend his relationship with Kerr, 27. “It s very strange that my personal life stirs up that kind of thing, that it’s that important to people who don’t even know us, who feel like I’m waiting on their approval. I’m not.”

“It s been a tough road last year, but I feel like we’re on the other side of it,” he said.
