Everyone starts somewhere.

Keith Urban may be a superstar now, but the American Idol judge got a little musical blast from the past Tuesday when he appeared on Live with Kelly and Michael.

The hosts surprised Urban, 46, with a clip they dug up of him performing in his own competition, singing the Air Supply hit “All Out of Love” on Australian television. The country heartthrob was definitely in the midst of his awkward teen phase back then, sporting a gap between his teeth and a stick-straight mullet haircut.

Urban told hosts Kelly Ripa and Michael Strahan that he competed on four different shows from the time he was 9 until he was 15, and that experience, he said, makes him “empathetic” to the young Idol contestants who show plenty of nerves once they move from rehearsals to live performances.

“I can relate to that,” he said of his obvious stage fright in the clip. “I saw it back and I was, ‘Oh, I’m terrible!’ It was a bit of the camera syndrome.”
