Keith Urban‘s father, Robert Urban, has been placed in hospice care.

Urban revealed the emotional news while touring his new exhibit at the Country Music Hall of Fame on Wednesday.

“He’s probably only got a few weeks, if that,” Urban, 48, told The Tennessean. “I’ve just been dealing with that the last couple of days. This has all come at a very strange time where it’s typical of a career that has extreme highs and extreme lows all often at the exact same time. So [the exhibit] is bittersweet a little bit because [my dad] is the catalyst for all of this. My dad is the catalyst for me living in America.”

Urban credits his dad, a huge country music fan, with inspiring his own love for country. He shared the story of going to a record store with his dad to get the new Don Williams album, and after realizing his dad didn’t even know any music on the album, he asked him how he could be so sure that the album was even worth buying.

“I remember saying to my dad, ‘Oh, what’s the single off this album?'” recalled Urban. “And he said, ‘I don’t know. I haven’t heard anything off it.’ And I said, ‘Well, how do you know it’s going to be good?’ And he said, ‘It’s Don Williams.’ And it hit me in such a way that I thought, ‘Oh, I’d love to make records where people know it’s going to be solid and they go out and get it.’ So I want to thank them for starting me on this journey.”
