Kacey Musgraves is “just a dime store cowgirl.”
In a video that’s not short of cowboy hats or boots, Musgraves takes PEOPLE behind the scenes of her upcoming record, Pageant Material (out June 23 here) – which she admits is “country as s—.”
The 26-year-old also gives a sneak peek at a studio session for her infectious tune, “Dime Store Cowgirl.”
“I had this title saved for a while. It’s something that someone said to me a long time ago. I was probably 11 or 12,” the country singer explains about the song’s fun name.
“I like to cock my hat back – my cowboy hat – which I still think is really cute today, and I was like doing my own thing, and this stage mom came over and she was like ‘Don’t wear your hat like that. You’re going to look like some dime store cowgirl.’ So there’s a song now.”
“Pageant Material lives in a Western-tinged world, and the songs are like little stories. ‘Dime Store Cowgirl’ is really special to me,” Musgraves tells PEOPLE. “Every single thing in this song is true. It’s really from this small town girl’s point of view … I’ve grown a lot in the last couple of years.”
