Kacey Musgraves Covers Selena Quintanilla-Pérez in Houston 24 Years After Late Singer's Last Concert
Kacey Musgraves covered "Como La Flor" at the Houston Rodeo almost exactly 24 years after Selena Quintanilla-Pérez gave her last concert at the venue
The Grammy-winning country star covered Quintanilla-Pérez’s 1992 hit “Como La Flor” during her performance at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo on Monday night, almost exactly 24 years after Quintanilla-Pérez performed her last concert at the venue on Feb. 26, 1995, a month before being murdered by her former fan club president Yolanda Saldívar.
“24 years ago Selena performed her last concert here,” Musgraves, 30, wrote in an Instagram Story posted to her account on Tuesday. “It was a dream of mine to be able to pay my respects to her iconic legacy.”
In another slide on her Instagram Story, Musgraves shared that performing at the Houston Rodeo has been on her “bucket list for a long time and opening it last night was EVERYTHING.”
“Thank you to all 53k+ of you who made this Texan’s dreams come true,” she added.
Quintanilla-Pérez’s sister, Suzette, thanked Musgraves and shared a video of the performance to her Instagram account.
“Awww this makes me wanna shed a tear! Takes me back,” Suzette captioned the video. “A Big Big Thank you @spaceykacey for the love at the Houston Rodeo tonite with that SELENA Y LOS DINOS Jam!”
Fans praised the performance on Twitter, with one user writing, “Let me tell you about what @KaceyMusgraves did tonight at @RODEOHOUSTON, she gave TEXAS Selena back for one night, one song. This meant a lot to Tejano fans. She has no idea how powerful and meaningful this truly was.”
Another wrote, “Kacey Musgraves is just Selena Quintanilla reincarnated in a country goddess.”
Yet another used Musgraves’ meme-worthy reaction to winning Album of the Year at the 2019 Grammys earlier in February and wrote, “My face when I hear @KaceyMusgraves singing Como la Flor, in honor of Selena!! Mad respect ✊🏼 love her even more 💕.”
Along with Musgraves, other stars on the lineup to perform at the Houston Rodeo through March include Luke Bryan, Cardi B, Camila Cabello, Tim McGraw, Kane Brown, Chris Stapleton and Brad Paisley. On March 17, the rodeo concludes with a performance by George Strait.
Next up for Musgraves — who is currently on her Oh What a World: Tour— is the ACM Awards, where she’s nominated for five categories, including Female Artist of the Year and Album of the Year. The ACM Awards will air live from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas on April 7 at 8 p.m. ET on CBS.
