Joey Martin of Joey & Rory Undergoes Surgery for Cervical Cancer
Rory Lee Feek of the duo Joey + Rory revealed some frightening news about his wife in his latest post on his blog, “This Life I Live.”
Wife Joey Martin underwent a radical hysterectomy at Nashville’s TriStar Centennial Medical Center after her doctor discovered cervical cancer during a routine exam in late May.
The good news is Martin’s cancer was discovered in its early stages and she will require no further treatment with chemotherapy or radiation, Feek wrote.
The operation caps some challenging months for the Pottsville, Tennessee husband-wife country duo. After Martin gave birth to daughter Indiana earlier this year, doctors told the couple that the baby, Martin’s first child, had Down syndrome.
The couple, who got their break on CMT’s Can You Duet, has taken a break from the music business in the past six months to focus on family life. They are relying on their faith as they handle some big challenges, Feek wrote, noting his wife’s selfless and “brave” focus on their newborn in the wake of her own illness.
When they got back home after learning about the cancer – Martin’s doctor cried when telling her the scary diagnosis, Feek wrote – Martin picked up baby Indiana and cradled her, singing the gospel hymn “I Need Thee Every Hour.” Soon, Feek grabbed his guitar after several months of not playing, and the family bonded over music.
“And then, like turning off a faucet, we said a prayer, dried our tears and put our trust in Him,” Feek wrote.
The couple’s rep, Elizabeth Meade, told PEOPLE on Thursday that the family is optimistic.
“Joey is recovering really well and everyone is in great spirits,” Meade said. “Both Joey and Rory are so humbled by the outpouring of love and support they’ve been shown over the past 24 hours. They know that God has a plan for everyone and they’re just taking the journey one day at a time.”
