From country crooner to acting as Aaron!

Jake Owen is set to make his film debut at the end of this month in the upcoming film Our Friend starring Dakota Johnson, Casey Affleck and Jason Segel — and PEOPLE has an exclusive sneak peek of the 39-year-old's role as Aaron.

In the clip, Aaron tells a story during dinner with a set of friends, including characters Matthew (Affleck), Nicole (Johnson) and Dane (Segal).

The movie, which was filmed in Fairhope, Alabama, is based on a true story about a husband who gets the help of his best friend to care for his terminally ill wife. Owen plays a friend of the friend in the film.

"I've always been intrigued by challenging myself to do things that I'm not necessarily comfortable with," Owen told PEOPLE about the role in 2019. "No one hired me for this because they saw me act in a film before," he adds. "I think they're putting faith in me that I can do this, and that gives me some energy."

The country singer explained that memorizing lines and learning song lyrics are quite similar — especially when you forget a few words.

In either situation, "you roll with it," he said then, "and just act."

The release of the new film comes about a month after PEOPLE learned that Owen and his longtime girlfriend Erica Hartlein are engaged. (The two share daughter Paris Hartley, 20 months.)

"Our little Paris was there to witness the complete surprise. So much of a surprise, Erica didn't have her nails done..(yes, I now know that's [a] big deal I guess 💅🏼)" Owen wrote on Facebook. "She said yes in the sprinkle of a Nashville snow, and we celebrated by going to her favorite restaurant. She was successful not getting Polynesian Sauce on that bling 💍."

The two have been together since 2017. (He also shares daughter Olive Pearl, 8, with ex-wife Lacey Buchanan.)

Our Friend premieres in select theaters and on demand Jan. 22.
