Dan + Shay Open Up About Winning Their First Grammy: 'We're Thankful, Man, It's Crazy'
The Nashville act took home the award for best country duo/group performance
Cheers to Dan + Shay!
Before the 61st annual Grammy Awards telecast began, Nashville act Dan + Shay took home the best country duo/group performance award for their smash hit “Tequila.”
“It’s just absolutely crazy, man — my heart’s still beatin’ really fast. This is the craziest moment in our career, and it’s hard to kind of take it all in. Winning a grammy, man!” Mooney says. “It’s a huge moment. We’re thankful, man, this is crazy.”
Indeed, the win is still sinking in for Smyers.

“I’m waiting for somebody to be like, ‘We’re sorry guys, they read the wrong name in the card’ and then they take it,” Smyers says. “This is crazy; it’s surreal. We’re trying to enjoy the moment.”
Since Dan + Shay dropped “Tequila” in January of 2018, they admit they are often offered a libation — especially when they’re on press tours.
“It’s usually like morning shows, they like to take a shot,” says Mooney. “It’s like 7 in the morning, and they’re like, ‘Guys ready? We’re gonna play this tequila game.’ And we’re like, ‘We’d rather not, we just woke up 20 minutes ago!’ ”
Adds Smyers: “It’s fun though! We like tequila — it’s our favorite drink. People are very generous with it. It’s a good thing.”
The 61st Annual Grammy Awards are broadcasting live from Staples Center in Los Angeles on Sunday, Feb. 10 at 8:00 p.m. ET/5:00 p.m. PT on CBS.
