Jana Kramer is on cloud nine.

The newlywed opened up to PEOPLE about her husband Michael Caussin at the CMT Awards Wednesday, calling him her “best friend.”

“This is just so natural,” Kramer – who’s been married twice and was formerly engaged to fellow country star Brantley Gilbert – said at the show. “He doesn’t judge me or my past. He is my sounding board. He is my best friend.”

The country star found true love “once I hit my 30’s [and] stopped taking crap and started figuring out who I was and what I wanted,” she says. “I love to love and sometimes that meant forcing it when it wasn’t right.”

The couple wed last month, and though “every day is a honeymoon with him,” says the star, they haven’t found time yet to embark on a real honeymoon.

“We want to be able to really get away and enjoy it,” says Kramer. “We know we want to go to St. Lucia and we’ll get there.”

Caussin was previously a tight end for the Washington Redskins and recently “made the decision to retire from football,” says the singer. “It’s a huge decision and he really struggled with it. It’s been his whole life.”

According to Kramer, her new husband is taking a new job with a Dallas-based company, but their home base is Nashville. “I support him in whatever he does,” she says. “I just want him to be happy and I want him to be healthy.”

Adds the star: “I am so happy in my work and my life right now. Everything is really good.”
