Chris Young has been happy to share a stage with his buddy Lee Brice on their current co-headlining tour, but when it comes to performing at the launch of Sports Illustrated‘s famed swimsuit issue this week, the singer says the show was all his.

“I did hear from one artist buddy who said, ‘Whoa, whoa, whoa, how did you get this?’ And I’m like, ‘I don’t know, but no, you can’t come!’ ” Young tells PEOPLE of the gig. “I did say ‘yes’ really fast when they asked me. And I probably had like 20 guitar techs coming to that show.”

Young was part of a two-day musical line-up in Nashville to celebrate the launch, with other country artists including Holly Williams, Will Hoge and Chris Stapleton.

Young, who admits he can be accident prone, says he was just hoping to keep his cool around the magazine models in town for the event. “I like to think I’m going to be just fine, that I’m not going to say anything really dumb but there always is that off chance,” he says. “Cause I’m totally the guy that would trip going up the steps. I don’t think it will happen, but it could.”

One thing’s for sure, though: despite the beachwear-themed launch, Young and his band did not join in with Speedos of their own.

“No, we didn’t wear swimsuits!” he says. “All of us are heading to Wisconsin today, so we just prepped for that instead.”
