In a sweet video about her new single, “What I Never Knew I Always Wanted,” the country singer, 32, explains how the song reflects the road she’s taken with her husband Mike Fisher, 35, and their baby boy Isaiah, 7 months. “It’s about not necessarily making plans, but somehow – this is going to sound so cheesy, the words that just popped into my head – finding your destiny,” says Underwood. “You can have all of your plans laid out, your schedules, your ‘I’m going to do X, Y, Z and I’m going to work here and I’m going to get married here,’ and sometimes it doesn’t work out that way, but what you get is so much better than what you ever could have planned,” Underwood says. Though Underwood didn’t map everything out, her major milestones have unfolded like a fairytale. The country superstar exchanged vows with the hockey pro in July 2010. With their five-year wedding anniversary on the horizon earlier this year, Underwood and Fisher welcomed Isaiah in February. “Like me, I never dreamt of my wedding, who I was going to marry, what I was going to look like – and then I found my husband and it just made sense,” she say in the clip. “He made sense. We made sense together. And then the same thing with Isaiah.” The singer continues, “I always assumed I’d have a family but I never took it seriously – I never really planned it out, ‘This is how many I’m going to have, this is what’s going to happen.’ The second I knew that he existed, I was just in love – couldn’t imagine my life without him or my husband now.” Underwood, who gets candid about the challenges of being a mom in this week’s cover story, says her new album Storyteller, out Friday, isn’t what you’d anticipate from a new parent. “I feel like everybody expected me to have an album full of 13 mommy-and-me tracks,” she tells PEOPLE of the set. I’m still me, and this is just another layer.” For much more of Carrie Underwood’s intimate interview and exclusive personal photos, pick up the latest issue of PEOPLE, on newsstands now.
