Year after year after year, Keith Urban was always the bridesmaid but never the bride when it came to the entertainer of the year category at the Academy of Country Music Awards. He’d come to believe that he would never win the top prize, but on Sunday night at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, his name was finally called — and it got emotional.

“I’ve been nominated nine times and at some point I came to terms and accepted that the nomination is the award,” the 51-year-old told reporters after the win. “I don’t know how things go that way sometimes. I love what I get to do and put everything into it, and I know all the others do to, so thank you God. Really.”

During his speech, Urban sweetly acknowledged his wife, Nicole Kidman, 51. “Baby girl, I love you so much,” he said from the stage.

Urban later explained that as much as he loves the accolades, his main focus is his music and raising the bar.

“I’m always trying to do that. Win, lose or draw as far as awards go, I’m already thinking about the studio right now, and eventually putting on another live show,” he said.

“For me, it’s aways about trying to find new ways to connect, and I love country music. I love the massive spectrum of colors that it is. I hope what we eventually get to hear and see is all of its colors represented, because it’s a huge genre. It’s not one thing… I love what’s happening now with all of it starting to get represented.”

One person jokingly taking credit for Urban’s big win? Shay Mooney of Dan + Shay (who were also big winners of the night.)

“I hugged him like two minutes before [he won],” Mooney joked of Urban. “I’m not saying it’s a coincidence.”
