Kelsea Ballerini‘s performance of "Peter Pan" at the Academy of Country Music Awards in Las Vegas Sunday night was quite literally a dream come true for the singer.

The main reason? Nick Jonas, who she shared the stage with for a heartfelt performance of her new tune.

“I thought I was going to marry him when I was 13 years old,” Ballerini, who took home an ACM award for best new female artist, confessed to The Tennessean. “So, it’s very casual that I’m on stage with him.”

Right, totally casual! So could this be just the start of the pair making beautiful music together? Well, anything’s possible, neither Jonas, 23, or Ballerini, 22, are married and as Ballerini pointed out, “It’s Vegas, baby.”

After the performance, Ballerini reflected on sharing the spotlight with Jonas.

“It was awesome,” she told PEOPLE. “It was my first big kid award show performance and I was so excited to do ‘Peter Pan.’ It’s my favorite song I’ve gotten to release so far, and then to be able to share it with Nick – who is one of my favorite artists since I was like 12 – it was just super cool.”

Still, she she hasn’t freaked out – yet.

“I’m gonna fan girl later when I process it, but I had to act like I didn’t have his posters on my walls when I was 12 – but I did,” she explained.

Ballerini’s new tune isn’t exactly a love song though – it’s more of a love gone wrong song.

“I loved the idea of having a song about a breakup that wasn’t some dramatic cheating or scandal moment,” Ballerini recently told PEOPLE of the song. “It’s the kind of thing where one person just can’t emotionally match the other, and that’s a sad kind of ending and heartbreak.”

Before hitting the stage, Jonas was spotted posing for photos with Faith Hill and Tim McGraw backstage, where George Clooney’s Casamigos tequila was being poured.
