Cover girl Sofía Carson Dishes on Fashion, Beauty and Being Bicultural in New People en Español
What isn’t Sofía Carson up to these days?
The Colombian-American actress and budding singer, 24, stars in Disney’s popular saga Descendants and the upcomingspinoff Pretty Little Liars: The Perfectionists. The Internet sensation, with over 8 million followers on Instagram, is also emerging as a fashion force to reckon with. The new People En Español cover girl revealed her secrets to staying radiant and versatile in an exclusive interview with the magazine’s fashion and beauty director, Ursula Carranza.
The rising Latina star explained of maintaining a repertoire of fashion personas: “When I have a press day as an actress, I dress more classic, timeless, more feminine; and when I go as a singer, I make sure to add more of an edge, like Gwen Stefani, who always looks classic but with a touch of rock and roll.” Other style influencers: “I have always liked Audrey Hepburn, Grace Kelly, Angelina Jolie.”
She also dished on her favorite designers. “Giambattista Valli is the personification of femininity, ethereal but fresh and contemporary. I used David Koma a lot, his lines are very flattering, cool and edgy,” she said. She also mentioned late couturier and shoe designer Azzedine Alaïa.“When I was in Paris during Fashion Week, he invited me to his atelier and dressed me for a show. It was an unforgettable moment,” she reminisced.
As for her beauty regimen, Carson takes care of her flawless skin by using SPF 100 sunblock and exfoliating four times a week. She also moisturizes frequently and goes makeup-free on her days off work. “All my creams are Obagi, the exfoliant, the hydrating lotion,” she said. “I use face masks from Kérastase’s Nutritive line.”
The hardworking starlet is currently in the studio working on her music debut. “Composing music is a process I fell in love with when I was 10 years old. The most important thing is being honest in my music because writing a song is giving away a piece of your heart to the world,” she added. “I want each of the songs I release to be a faithful reflection of who I am.”
No doubt Carson — born Sofía Daccarett Char — will take inspiration from her Latin roots. Born in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, to Colombian parents, Carson celebrates being bicultural and bilingual. “Being a Hispanic has been a huge plus in my career, an honor and source of pride,” she said.
