Although it’s been just days since the passing of his mother, Marc Anthony is sticking to his work schedule. The salsa superstar, who announced the death of his mother via Twitter last Thursday, gave it his all during his first public appearance this weekend in Miami.

Anthony was set to perform at El Clásico (The Classic) soccer match between major rivals Real Madrid and FC Barcelona, and as a surprise to many, he followed through with the show. In mourning, the singer took to the stage to perform a few of his hit songs, even with the pain of his mother’s Guillermina’s passing.

He had the audience in high spirits with his popular song “Vivir Mi Vida (Live My Life),” a song whose lyrics celebrate life and happiness while emphasizing the importance in letting go of sadness. It was at the end of this performance that fans could see his the raw emotion of his loss. Anthony blurted out the word “puñeta,” at the end of the track, which means “damn” in Spanish and is commonly used to express agitation or disappointment.

The 48-year-old kept the crowd dancing and singing along to hits “La Gozadera (The Good Time)” and “Tu Amor Me Hace Bien (Your Love Does Me Good).”

Anthony received praise from fans on social media for making the appearance amid his the loss of his mother. “In spite of your pain… Excellent… Like a professional,” wrote one user.

Shortly before the performance, Anthony had been surrounded by his children as seen in the photo published by his ex-wife Jennifer Lopez on Instagram. “Just what the doctor ordered…Surrounded by love,” Lopez captioned the post. “Descansas en Paz Ginny… te vamos a extrañar (Rest in Peace Ginny… we will miss you).”
