La La Anthony has been hard at work focusing on new projects and most notably, her acting career. She currently stars in the drama series POWER, which is in its fourth season, and she’s also coming fresh off the set of Furlough starring Whoopi Goldberg. Nearly two decades after stepping into the entertainment industry, the Puerto-Rican actress still faces the challenge of finding her place in Hollywood as an Afro-Latina.

“I definitely don’t feel like I’m what Hollywood thinks of when they think of a Latina actress at all,” Anthony told Latina, “They can’t wrap their minds around it. I actually speak Spanish fluently. The industry just hasn’t been thinking outside the box when it comes to Latina women.”

She continued, “We come in all colors. My grandfather was extremely dark and from Puerto Rico, but his brother had blond hair and blue eyes. There are so many different shades, and I think Hollywood has yet to realize that.”

The former MTV VJ, whose maiden name is Vasquez, has always been open to discussing her background and the reality of people questioning her race. She has made Puerto Rican Day parade appearances and ensures that her son learns Spanish and the Latino culture.

In June, fellow actress Dascha Polanco from Orange Is the New Black also spoke about the hardships of being an Afro-Latina in Hollywood telling Vivala, “We have to be ‘Fake Latinas.’ And here’s the thing about ‘Fake Latinas’ – when you look at Latinas who are succeeding in Hollywood, they’re super thin, and you really can’t tell if she’s Latina or not.”
