Celebrities Continue to Show Support for Puerto Rico in the Aftermath of Hurricane Maria

After Category 4 storm Hurricane Maria ravaged Puerto Rico and left islanders with a lack of electricity and running water and fast-dwindling food supplies, celebrities immediately united on social media to help out by collecting material donations, fundraising and encouraging fans to follow suit.

Hamilton composer Lin Manuel Miranda, Jane the Virgin star Gina Rodriguez, late night host Jimmy Fallon, and reality T.V.’s Kim Kardashian West were among the celebrities lending a helping hand. “I will be donating to Puerto Rico and help them get the food & water they desperately need. Please donate,” wrote Kardashian West on Twitter. In the same tweet, she also shared a photo of a plea written on a street in Puerto Rico that reads, “S.O.S We need water/food.”

On Twitter, Miranda urges his followers and fellow celebrities daily to donate to the Hispanic Federation, a charity that gives 100 percent of their proceeds to local work for recovery in Puerto Rico. He’s also hinted that he’s working on a song in honor of his family’s home island. Rodriguez joined Miranda in soliciting donations for the Hispanic Federation. The actress regularly retweets followers, politicians and other celebs who are speaking out on ways to help.

Ellen DeGeneres called on her 73 million followers to pitch in, tweeting, “If you can help our fellow Americans in #PuertoRico, I hope you will. The damage is unbelievable.”

Last Saturday, Jennifer Lopez joined New York Governor Andrew Cuomo at a press conference to address the affects of Hurricane Maria on Puerto Rico: “Lives have been lost. Power is down across the entire island,” she said. “More than 15,000 people have been forced into shelters, and the storm has devastated the lives of thousands of others.” She also announced her plans to $1 million from the proceeds of her Las Vegas residency to help the victims.
