Amor for Selena Quintanilla seems to be at an all-time high: Madame Tussauds in New York and Los Angeles recently unveiled wax sculptures of the late singer; Google commemorated her life and legacy in a Doodle; and the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce is unveiling her star posthumously on the Walk of Fame come Nov. 3. Now, America Ferrera is joining the lovefest.
The actress of Honduran descent shared a side-by-side photo on Instagram of Quintanilla and her Superstore character Amy dressed up as the late Tejano queen for the show’s Halloween episode. “Basically twins. It’s Halloween on @nbcsuperstore tonight and I am v. excited about Amy’s costume choice. #Selena #Halloween,” she captioned the post. Twins, indeed.
In the episode, Ferrera wears the iconic purple jumpsuit Quintanilla wore at her final concert before her tragic death at the hands of her fan club’s president, Yolanda Saldívar, in 1995.
Although set stylists usually make wardrobe selections for cast members, Ferrera was the brainchild behind her Halloween costume. “The last two years, Justin [Spitzer] has asked me what I wanted to be,” she told Entertainment Weekly last month. “Most of us get to choose what we want to be unless it has something to do with the story line.”
“Our Halloween episode is always a great episode because we get to get out of our daily vest,” she added, “and into something more fun. And I am very, very excited about my costume this year on the show.”
