Star Trek's Zoë Saldana Opens Up About Losing Costar Anton Yelchin: 'We're Allowing Ourselves to Grieve'
"It's a new feeling," Zoë Saldana tells PEOPLE of promoting Star Trek Beyond without costar Anton Yelchin
Saldana recently began doing press interviews for the latest Star Trek installment for the first time since the 27-year-old died in a freak car accident in Los Angeles on June 19.
“It’s a new feeling,” Saldana tells PEOPLE of promoting the film without Yelchin. “It’ll take quite a while for me to adjust to it, and I’m sure that I can speak freely for everybody else too.”
Star Trek Beyond director Justin Lin found a way to honor Yelchin at the end of the film: The phrase “For Anton … ” appears in the credits.
“I would say there’s no replacing him,” Abrams said. “There’s no recasting. I can’t possibly imagine that, and I think Anton deserves better.”

“We’re just talking about him intimately,” she says. “It still hasn’t been a month. It’s a very raw feeling right now and we’re allowing ourselves to just grieve. Remembering him is the important thing and so that’s what we’ve been doing a lot.”
Just after Yelchin’s passing, Saldana posted a tribute to him on Instagram.
“Your sudden and unexpected departure has left us all broken hearted,” Saldana wrote. She also called him “kind, present, old souled, curious, brilliant, funny, humble, [and] honest.”
