Elwood Edwards’s name might not sound familiar, but his voice probably does.

Edwards, who recorded the greeting “You’ve Got Mail” for AOL on a cassette deck in his living room 25 years ago, appeared on the Today show Thursday morning to discuss the now-iconic slogan. (AOL users will also recognize Edwards’s voice from the phrases “Welcome,” “File’s Done” and “Goodbye.”)

Edwards, who has worked as a video and graphics editor at NBC’s Cleveland affiliate for the past 13 years, told Today that few recognize him.

“At my bank, they do. But when I’m out and about, people normally don’t have any clue who I am.”
