Yogi Berra, Others Come Out to Play
Celebs from art, television and film took to an East Hampton diamond Saturday at the 53rd Annual Artists and Writers softball game benefiting the East Hampton Day Care Center, The Retreat and the East End Hospice. Stars such as Roy Scheider, 76-year-old baseball legend Yogi Berra and Peter Jennings attended the event, which was sponsored by Coke, Details Magazine, Adidas and French's Mustard. A newly-bearded Scheider, who pitched his eighth game in ten years, played right through the ninth inning and Berra, who sat on the sidelines after throwing the first pitch said, "It feels good to see somebody else play." His son, Dale, a former player for the New York Yankees and Pittsburgh Pirates, hit a single during his first at bat. The Writers won the game, 18-8.
