Yfke Sturm, a Dutch Victoria’s Secret model who fractured her skull in a surfing accident off the coast of the Italian island of Ischia, has woken up from a medically induced coma, Italian newspapers are reporting.
Sturm, 33, was riding a jetsurf – a motorized surfboard – when she fell into the water and hit her head, The Telegraph reports.
The London-based model, who gave birth to a son in July, was rushed to a local hospital on Ischia and then airlifted to a specialist clinic in Naples.
Sturm suffered a fractured skull and several fractured vertebrae, leaving her at risk of paralysis. Following the accident, Sturm he was placed in a medically induced coma and required the use of a ventilator.
On Thursday, Italian newspaper La Repubblica reported that Sturm had come out of her coma and was showing improvement.
Yfkes father Wilfred Sturm had told Dutch newspaper The Telegraaf on Friday that his daughter had a “hairline fracture in her skull” but there was “no bleeding”.
A spokesperson for Next Models, which represents Sturm in the UK, told The Telegraph: “We are shocked to hear about this terrible accident. Our thoughts are with Yfke and her family at this time and we are praying for her speedy recovery.”
In addition to modeling for Ralph Lauren, Marc Jacobs, Valentino, Chanel, Yves Saint Laurent and Victoria’s Secret, Sturm serves as an ambassador for the Dutch Red Cross Foundation and hosts Holland’s Next Top Model.
