X Game motocross star Jeremy Lusk died Monday of head injuries sustained in a crash during a competition in Costa Rica over the weekend.

Lusk, 24, was attempting to land a backflip when he crashed and was rushed to the intensive care unit with severe head injuries, the Associated Press reports. His body eventually entered into cardiac and respiratory failure.

Lusk is a 2008 X Games Freestyle gold medalist who was also the first to succeed at landing a double-grab Hart Attack backflip, which earned him an additional silver medal for best trick at the ’08 X Games.

His parents Chuck and Gina Lusk, wife Lauren, and several fellow riders were at his side when he died Monday night at Calderon hospital in San Jose, Costa Rica.

His tragic death follows the death of another young rider, Anthony Hart, younger brother of Carey Hart, who passed away in August from head injuries following a motocross accident.

Friends and family have set up a trust in memory of Lusk through the Athlete Recovery Fund.
