WWF Goes to Mat

Don’t mess with the World Wrestling Federation. The WWF is reportedly turning a cold shoulder to a feature documentary on wrestling, “Beyond the Mat” (set to open March 17). USA Today reports that the federation is backing off on a signed deal to promote the movie and that the WWF plans to prohibit ads for the movie from airing between WWF matches on UPN, USA Network or in syndication. WWF spokesman Jim Byrne said of the proposed ban on the movie ads, “We do not permit third-party wrestling product to be advertised in the body of our shows. It creates confusion.” The movie’s distributor, Lions Gate Films, which claims it has a signed contract with the WWF (which allegedly promised to promote the movie), is now exploring legal options to counteract what it calls “this outrageous act.”
