It’s official: Lupita Nyong’o has been named PEOPLE’s Most Beautiful. Congratulations!

It’s a milestone year for PEOPLE’s annual list: This year, the issue turns 25. So we’re celebrating with a flashback to the very first person named the Most Beautiful: Michelle Pfeiffer.

In 1989, Pfeiffer starred in The Fabulous Baker Boys, alongside brothers Jeff and Beau Bridges. Pfeiffer prepared for her role with thorough voice training, performing all of her character Susie Diamond’s vocals.

Her dedication paid off: Critic Janet Maslin, of The New York Times, called Pfeiffer’s performance “electrifyingly right,” adding that “Ms. Pfeiffer’s furiously hard-boiled, devastatingly gorgeous Susie … affects the film the way a match might affect a fuse.”

Watching the above clip, in which Pfeiffer sings “Makin’ Whoopee,” one would be hard-pressed to disagree.
