Happy World Toilet Day!

That’s right: We now live in a world where tacos, cheeseburgers, fondue and, yes, toilets have entire days devoted to them. But today is a bit different than the scores of novelty holidays – World Toilet Day seeks to raise awareness surrounding a very important public health issue: improving access to sanitation for the 2.4 billion people who lack access to improved sanitation and toilets.

“It is about the nearly 1 billion people who have to defecate in the open. It is about the millions of children whose futures are compromised by poor sanitation and related nutrition problems. And it is about you, who can’t wait to change this situation,” reads the World Toilet Day website, which details the purpose behind the day, first designated by the United Nations General Assembly in 2013.

For this year, World Toilet Day hopes to draw attention to the crucial yet overlooked link between sanitation and nutrition, as lack of access to drinking water and sanitation is one of the main causes of poor nutrition.

On UNICEF’s Twitter account, people around the world are speaking out about the importance of having safe access to toilets.

Sorry National Cheeseburger Day, but it looks like World Toilet Day may dethrone you for the title of Most Important Made Up Day Devoted to an Object.
