What's Hot in Cannes

Last year Roberto Benigni had the buzz in Cannes. This year it’s the almost-as-colorful Spanish director, Pedro Almodovar. Almodovar’s “All About My Mother” seems to be the unanimous choice among Cannes-watchers for the Golden Palm, the festival’s top award. It is the 13th film by the man best known for “Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown,” and many say it’s his best. Somehow Almodovar manages to achieve the perfect balance between tragedy and humor with a quartet of absorbing women who form an offbeat family: a grieving single mother, a transvestite, an impressionable young nun and a lesbian actress. Asked the secret of his success, Almodovar replied: “It’s just talent.”
