Plus: Scarlett Johansson gets in an accident, Justin Timberlake gets an apology, and more
BRAD & JEN KAPUT: It’s all over but the waiting for Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston. On Aug. 19, a retired California judge hired by the ex-couple signed their divorce papers, granting the onetime Hollywood couple single status after 4 1/2 years of marriage. Under California law, the divorce won’t be finalized until Oct. 2. Aniston filed for divorce in March, citing irreconcilable differences. Later in the week, Pitt and Angelina Jolie turned up at a Canadian museum outside Calgary, where he is shooting a film. The Mr. & Mrs. Smith costars have not publicly commented on their relationship.
MARTHA’S LITTLE HELPERS: On Monday, Martha Stewart revealed more details about her new reality show, The Apprentice: Martha Stewart, which debuts Sept. 21. Assisting Stewart in the “conference room” –Stewart’s equivalent of Donald Trump’s boardroom – will be her daughter, Alexis, and Stewart’s longtime chairman of the board, Charles Koppelman. Stewart called the pair “a dynamic duo,” and said no one knows her business better than Alexis. Later in the week, Stewart was promoting the “Apprentice” and her daytime show when she showed reporters the monitoring device she’s worn around her ankle since her release from a minimum-security prison five months ago. However, she wouldn’t tell them what catchphrase she intends to use when she dismisses her “Apprentice” wannabes.
SCARLETT’S FENDER-BENDER: Scarlett Johansson kept a cool head when she sideswiped another car as she was fleeing a caravan of paparazzi, emergency 911 tapes released this week showed. The 20-year-old actress reportedly was trying to lose a posse of celebrity photographers who began following her car outside her Hollywood home. When Johansson turned off the freeway to try to ditch the four SUVs that were pursuing her, her car scraped the edge of another vehicle carrying a woman and her two daughters, none of whom were hurt. Johansson called 911, and the California Highway Patrol responded. No charges were filed in the accident.
TABLOID’S TIMBERLAKE APOLOGY: A British tabloid apologized to pop star Justin Timberlake for a story it published in 2004 claiming that the former boy-band singer had had an affair with model Lucy Clarkson. The News of the World paper ran an article last July alleging that Timberlake had cheated on girlfriend Cameron Diaz with Clarkson, apparently based on information provided by Clarkson. The singer pressed forward with a libel suit, prompting the tabloid to admit the story was false. An attorney for Clarkson said her story was “an entire fabrication.” The paper also gave Timberlake an undisclosed chunk of change, which he said he planned to donate to charity.
IDOL MEDICAL EMERGENCY: American Idol runner-up Bo Bice is on the road to recovery. The crowd-pleasing rocker was rushed to a Las Vegas hospital Aug. 18 while on tour with the Idol live show. There, he underwent surgery for an intestinal problem – the latest in a series of mishaps for the 29-year-old singer that includes a broken foot he sustained during a performance July 31. Bice was reportedly released from the hospital Thursday, and left for an undisclosed location where he might take up to six weeks to recover, according to a family friend.
