Wannabes, warm up your pipes: The premiere of American Idol airs Tuesday on FOX. PEOPLE looks at what to expect from the fifth season, plus other events to check out in the coming week:

SUNDAY, JAN. 15: Another day, another political conspiracy. CIA agent Jack Bauer (Kiefer Sutherland) continues his quest to keep terrorists from destroying the world (yes, again) in the two-night, four-hour season premiere of 24 (Sunday and Monday, 8 p.m. ET, FOX). Also joining the cast this season: Lord of the Rings star Sean Astin and former RoboCop Peter Weller.

TUESDAY, JAN. 17: Paula, Randy and Simon are hoping to find the next Carrie Underwood in the fifth go-round of American Idol (Tuesday and Wednesday, 8 p.m., FOX). Abdul predicts that female fans will be swooning over a couple of the “gorgeous” male contestants. “The one girls are gonna fall in love with is Ace. And a guy named Patrick too. They both can sing too,” she tells PEOPLE.

Ed star Tom Cavanagh has crossed the bridge from New Jersey to the Big Apple as a record-label scout who’s enjoying the swingin’ single life in his new CBS series, Love Monkey (10 p.m. ET), based on a book by former PEOPLE staffer Kyle Smith. A bonus: Beverly Hills 90210‘s Jason Priestley costars as one of Cavanagh’s buddies.

WEDNESDAY, JAN. 18: Todd Bridges, Deborah Gibson, Bruce Jenner and Full House‘s Dave Coulier are among the “Where Are They Now?” stars teaming with figure skaters and hitting the ice in the kitschy new show Skating with Celebrities (8 p.m. ET on FOX).
