Since splitting from Justin Bieber two years ago, Selena Gomez has had a fair share of criticism lobbed at her for consistently reuniting with her ex.

Now, the star – whom a source told PEOPLE sought treatment earlier this year for her “toxic relationship” with the singer – is answering all concerned parties in a very big way.

Dropping a surprise single titled “Heart Wants What It Wants” early Thursday morning, Gomez, 22, is heard having an emotional discussion, presumably about her relationship with Bieber, 20, in the first minute of the dramatic music video.

“You make me feel crazy, you make me feel like it’s my fault,” she says in the video’s intro. “I was in pain I know him though, and I know that I know his heart, and I know what he wouldn’t do to hurt me.”

While promoting the new single on On Air With Ryan Seacrest Thursday morning, Gomez explained that the breakdown was recorded during the video shoot.

“They taped the mic underneath the table when I was shooting the video,” she told Seacrest. “And I had shot the video over a year ago. So, in that state – where I was in that place emotionally – I went in and I went into the room by myself, and I looked at the actual mirror in the music video, and I had a conversation [with] myself to every question I had in my mind in that moment.”

For his part, Bieber “thought it was beautiful,” Gomez said.
