Bruce Willis is going toe to toe (or should we say ankle to ankle?) with his “number one fan” – and PEOPLE has the exclusive first look at this all-new Broadway show.
The stage version marks Willis making his Broadway debut as famed novelist Paul Sheldon, who is rescued from a near-fatal car crash by his biggest fan, Annie Wilkes (Laurie Metcalf).
Sheldon soon comes to realize that Wilkes nursing him back to health is just the beginning of a horrifying captivity.
“They play their talents in different ways, delightfully, so that they’re both there in concert with each other,” director Will Frears told Entertainment Weekly of his two stars. “Laurie’s a genius and she’ll do things you’ve never considered possible. And there’s something just to have Bruce do Bruce, which I find thrilling to watch.”
In the clip, Willis and Metcalf are seen putting their own spin on classic scenes from the film, including a quick flash of the infamous sledgehammer Wilkes uses to break Sheldon’s ankle.
“There’s only ever been one way: you break his ankles with a sledgehammer,” Frears laughed. “The largest conversation was, which ankle first?”
Misery is now in previews at Broadway’s Broadhurst Theatre in a limited 16-week engagement.
