How do explain something like terrorism to a young child? Start by taking a cue from this father.

In an interview with Le Petit Journal, a dad and his son speak frankly about the Paris terror attacks. Asked by a reporter to explain if he knows why the city was attacked on Friday, the young boy answers, “Yes, because they’re really mean.”

He adds: “Bad guys are not very nice.”

The little boy then says his family will need to move because of the attacks, but his dad quickly corrects him. “Oh no, don’t worry. We don’t need to move out,” the father says. “France is our home.”

“But there’s bad guys, daddy,” the boy protests.

“Yes, but there’s bad guys everywhere,” his dad replies.

“They have guns, they can shoot us because they’re really mean, daddy,” the boy says.

“It’s okay, they might have guns, but we have flowers,” the father answers. The boy responds that flowers don’t do anything, but his dad cuts him off. “Of course they do, look, everyone is putting flowers. It’s to fight against guns.”

The boy noticeably perks at this explanation. “Do you feel better now?” the reporter asks. “Yes, I feel better,” the boy answers.
