Who needs medical school when you have 2 million subscribers?

YouTube beauty maven Manny Gutierrez (know to his fans as MannyMUA) is one of the most popular makeup artists online, but before he launched his wildly successful YouTube channel, his life was headed down a very different path.

Asked what advice he’d give to his millions of followers on social media, Gutierrez told a packed crowd of fans at VidCon 2016, “I would say just continue to follow your dreams, that’s my biggest thing.”

He continued, “I was in pre-med, which was such a different route for me. I was so interested in makeup but I got such pressure to follow what my family and friends wanted me to do.”

So Guitierrez decided to follow his dreams, even if those closest to him didn’t understand at first. “I was like, ‘You know what? I’m going to follow what I want to do. I’m going to take myself first … and I know some people might not like it, but I’m just going to keep on going.’ ”

Before long, he was able to turn stints and Sephora and MAC makeup counters into an Instagram following that would eventually grow to 2 million strong. Now, the 25-year-old has joint projects with Makeup Geek and Ofra Cosmetics, in addition to his YouTube channel, which boasts over 1 million followers.

“Whether you want to do makeup or whatever the hell you want to do, that’s what you love, so continue to pursue it,” he said. “That’s all we want is for you guys to be happy, and we’re happy with what we’re doing so we hope that can inspire you.”
